Problemas comunes
Hay una serie de errores (¡por supuesto!) en el
programa. Algunos de ellos al parecer solo ocurren cuando
usas el salvapantallas en Windows 95 o 98, pero hay algunos
también con Windows 3.x. Alguna gente no consigue
que funcione durante mas de una hora seguida sin que se
cuelgue; en mi máquina se colgó al final de
la escena:
Cena con la Sirena, que, por suerte no sale muy a
menudo. Otra gente consigue que funcione continuamente
durante días — ver, por ejemplo
"Isla Gigante" mas abajo.
Te puede muy bien salir un mensaje como este al empezar
alguna escena en particular. Es un error, y creo que es
debido a la manera en que el programa maneja la memoria -
a veces intenta escribir a posiciones de la memoria que
están siendo usados en ese momento por otro
programa, y eso provoca que se cuelge. Por desgracia no
hay nada que puedas hacer al respecto.
Alguna gente tiene problemas para hacer que funcione
con Windows 9x, 2000 o XP — fué escrito para
Windows 3.1, y Sierra nunca ha hecho una versión
posterior. Te puede salir un mensaje de "Can't find data
files" con Windows 2000, pues por defecto los archivos se
instalan en la carpeta winnt, y Johnny
los busca en la carpeta windows. La
solución es, o bien crear una carpeta windows y
poner los archivos de Johnny allí, o cambiar el
JohnnyCastaway.ini para decirle donde están
realmente los archivos. Puedes encontrar mas detalles en
la Página de Ayuda.

Johnny normalmente funciona bastante feliz en Windows
9x, pero puede salir a veces con algunos efectos
extraños:

No Funciona — Alguna gente ha
reportado que la pantalla inicial sale como si estuviera
todo bien, pero entonces, en lugar de aparecer Johnny y
su isla, el salvapantallas se apaga y aparece de nuevo
el escritorio; sin embargo funciona correctamente en
Vista Previa (en Panel de Control / Pantalla / Protector
de Pantalla.) Este problema es debido al programa
VirusScan de McAfee. Al instalarlo, VirusScan crea una
ficha extra en Panel de Control / Pantalla llamada
"ScreenScan". Cuando está activada la
casilla "Permitir escaneo mientras en modo
salvapantellas" el escaneo buscando posibles virus
continúa por detrás mientras funciona el
salvapantallas. Mientras esto sirve para la
mayoría de los salvapantallas, le para los pies a
Johnny, así que si quieres que funcione,
tendrás que desactivar esa casilla para parar esa
función concreta. Si instalas VirusScan usando su
configuración predeterminada, esa casilla
está activada por defecto.
Si no quieres desactivar ScreenScan, Lezlie A
Rodrigues sugiere que puedes ponerle una
contraseña al salvapantallas, pero tienes que
escribirla cada vez que quieras usar tu máquina
de nuevo (y puede que pare el chequeo
de virus de todas formas.)

No Funciona 2 — El 22 Dic 1998

¡He descubierto que al "desinstalador"
de CyberMedia no le gusta Johnny!
Cuando el CyberMediaAgent está en la barra de
tareas junto al reloj, no deja que Johnny funcione. Lo
único que tuve que hacer fué cerrarlo, y
volvió a la normalidad.

Files not found — Si pones
manualmente los archivos de
"recursos" en algún sitio distinto de
C:\SIERRA\SCRANTIC con Windows 9x, es fácil que
te salga el mensaje de "Files not found" que
mostramos al principio de esta
página, incluso aunque modifiques el
scrantic.ini para mostrarle donde están. El
salvapantallas funciona correctamente en la Vista Previa
del Panel de Control, pero no en la realidad.
Si usas el instalador de Sierra, que viene dentro de
johncast.exe, deberías poder poner los archivos
donde quieras sin problemas.

Congelado — El 22 Mar 1997
Bruce Kid reportó:
Mientras estaba arrancando Windows 95 al llegar a
la pantalla en que te pide un usuario y una
contraseña, Johnny Castaway empezó.
Solo llegó hasta la pantalla inicial y se
quedó congelado. Moví el ratón y
apropiadamente terminó. Esto ha ocurrido muchas,
muchas veces y ninguna vez ha conseguido pasar de la
pantalla de inicio a no ser que alguien haya iniciado
sesión, en cuyo caso funciona como un
sueño. No produce ningún sonido y no
muestra señales de de continuar.
El 28 Mar 1997 Bruce añadió:
Después de un periodo muy prolongado de
no usar mi ordenador, Johnny finalmente consiguió
pasar de la página de inicio. La animación
iba a unas dos imagines por minuto, pero el sonido
marchaba a velocidad normal. Llegaban sonidos de acciones
que a Johnny no se le vería hacer hasta dentro de
bastante rato. En un momento dado, después de que
mi ordenador de repente encontrara algo en el disco
duro, probablemente un componente del salvapantallas,
Johnny funcionó durante unos diez segundos a
velocidad normal y los sonidos se re-sincronizaron con
la animación, hasta que se congeló de
nuevo.
Algunos errorcillos comunes

JC invisible — Si no hay
suficiente memoria disponible en el sistema para que
funcione todo el programa, algunas veces te
encontrarás con que faltan partes de algunas
escenas, normalmente el mismo Johnny. Se ve, por
ejemplo, su caña de pescar y se oyen los
murmullos y salpicaduras, pero no se ve al hombre
propiamente dicho. La imagen muestra lo que puede
pasar hacia Nochevieja si no hay suficiente memoria
disponible. Si hay incluso menos memoria, los
archivos no se cargan en absoluto y te sale el famoso
mensaje de "the data files can't be found".

Mancha negra El 11 Sep 1997 09:08:07

Hay otra que he notado tanto en casa como en el
trabajo (donde usamos Win 3.1) y tambié han
visto otros asiduos observadores de Johnny: Cuando
Johnny está pescando en el lado izquierdo de
la isla y saca lo que ha pescado, aparece por un
momento una pequeña mancha negra semicircular
y luego desaparece.
Detallados estudios de nuestro departamento de
investigación han concluido que esto es
probablemente ¡el anzuelo de la caña de
pescar de Johnny que se ha ido al sitio equivocado!

Errorcillo gráfico —
Después de la escena descrita en la
Página de los piratas, donde los piratas
atan a Johnny, cuando se vá el galeón,
deja un extraño rectángulo en el mar
en el que los gráficos no se restuaran. Esto
ocurre también con Windows 9x y ha sido
confirmado por varias personas. Debe ser un fallo
en el código del programa.

La Caña de Pescar Perdida —
El 21 Ago 2002 Nick Tait notó que cuando
Johnny va a pescar al lado derecho de la
isla, pesca una bota pero en vez de tirarla de
nuevo al agua, se la queda, pero en cuanto se da la
vuelta hacia la palmera, la caña de pescar
desaparece misteriosamente. Le he observado
cuidadosamente con otras cosas que encuentra en el
agua en ambos lados de la isla. Cuando coge algo que
le gusta, se trae tanto lo que ha cogido como la
caña con él, pero con la bota en el
lado derecho de la isla, es solo la bota, la
caña ha desaparecido.
Sean Coukell también notó esto el
20 Abr 2003, y mandó esta imagen para
probarlo.

Balsa demasiado construida —
Sean también notó que Johnny
todavía sigue trabajando en su balsa incluso
aunque esté terminada.

"Extrañezas"
A veces se ven imagenes múltiples, o partes
de una escena superimpuestas en otra. Aquí hay
algunas de las que han sido reportadas.

Palmera transparente — El 16
Abr 2003 Germano escribió:
Esta mañana dejé el ordenador
encendido y, al volver a casa, noté que
¡la palmera de Johnny era transparente!
Continuaba asi incluso al cambiar de escena (incluso
siguió siendo transparente durante la
noche). [derecha].

Johnny volante — El 12 Jul
2000, Rebecca Pinkoski dijo:
Johnny escaló a lo alto de la palmera y
saltó, y la computadora se congeló
durante un segundo. Un Johnny entonces terminó
de zambullirse y continuó con sus cosas pero
un segundo Johnny se quedó suspendido en el
aire hasta que la escena terminó;
después del fundido en negro todo volvió
a la normalidad. Parecía una versión
sobrenatural del error de los "gemelos".

Después de que Johnny hiciera su danza
de la lluvia y fuera alcanzado por el rayo, al
cambiar la escena, ¡había dos bailarines
de la lluvia en las nubes! Pincha en la imagen
para verla en versión grande.

imagen de la derecha, y dijo:
Este extraño error
apareció hoy. Llegó el barco pirata
(por el día) y se fué dejando el
cuadrado — sin embargo en lugar de estar
revuelto, Johnny aparecía ... dentro del
cuadrado.

Giant Island — On 29 Jan 1997 Joel D Ray reported:
When I came in this morning, after leaving my computer on all night, my partner and I found a most interesting event taking place...
There were: 11 rafts each in a different location around the far side of the island...
10 Palm trees on the island...
I found that the one island that had grown to cover almost the entire screen with new islands forming to the lower left of the screen...
at one end of the island the tide was low showing the rock and at the other end the tide was high...
a MASSIVE cloud layer covered the entire top of the screen and extended down to the top of the trees...
I thought at first that this was just a program error or my computer screwed up again..BUT while we watched JC actually moved from one end of the island to the other end traveling without limits.
The funny part of it was while we watched for the next 30 minutes all JC did was walk around. There wasn't the usual fishing or fire building.
He later added:
Today another person working across from me also experienced a similar condition. Only his program created three islands but with 4 trees and 4 rafts and the clouds were also in the tops of the trees. Keep in mind that our computers run all the time and are never shut off.
On 13 Nov 1997 fan club member Remko Hartlief confirmed:
I'm a great Johnny Fan, and all the computers of the company are using the screensaver. And this is happening sometimes on some machine, so I have seen it.

Black boxes — On 22 Jan 1999, Patrick Cogan said:
I just loaded JC for the 8th time from 8 different sources. They all either crash or produce black rectangular boxes on the screen. I am sending you an example of the black box. (right — click on picture for a bigger version)

Dark cloud — On 21 Jan 1999 Simon Oliver said:

I've never seen this before — has anyone else? Writing on 2 June 1999, John Romero IV suggested that the cloud was somehow being selected, in the same way as an icon can be selected by clicking on it.

Multiple islands — on 16 Sep 1996 Graham Bagshaw reported:
I have two PCs connected via a LAN, one running Win 3.11 and one running Win 95 — both have the JC screensaver running. The Win 95 one is only used for part of the time (so far). Today it's been switched on all day but I only used it briefly this morning, so JC has had a good run. I'm now seeing a scenario I've not seen before — several desert islands, one on top of the other with amassing clouds above. Johnny just walks about around islands and between them — at one stage there was a raft between them. I'm wondering whether this is a new scenario that I've never had time to see before, or whether it's a Win 95 effect on a program that was essentially designed for Win 3.11.

The comment about multiple islands must be a bug coz I've seen it too and its not supposed to happen.
And on 7 Aug 1998 Jerry Rogers said:
I experienced the multiple island bug and have pictures (left — click on the pictures to see a bigger version). It was very strange, all he did was walk around, and every time the screen reset itself another island appeared.

I saw this screen (right) with I came in to work this morning. I am using Windows NT 4.0. This is the first time I have ever seen any of the multiple islands that others have reported.
After I captured this scene, I watched a while and when the screen blanked and came back again another island was added, making three full islands. By then the screen was getting pretty full!

The reason is simply that I had upgraded my BIOS setup to activate Energy Conservation on the hard disk and on my graphics card. This I know was the cause of the apparent bug because it went away as soon as I took away the Energy Conservation Measures.
I suspect something like this may cause the multiple islands etc. . .
However, other people have reported these when they don't have any energy saving programs running.

Consistently, when the "terminator Johnny" scene appears, I get two Johnnies. One jumps up and down trying to attract the plane while the other shakes the tree to dislodge a coconut. This resolves by the time he is ready to throw the coconut at the plane.

Multiple images — On 8 Jul 1998 Vernon Watson sent details and pictures:
On the morning of 8 July 1998, I captured the attached image just after the pirates had tied up Johnny and the seagull built a nest on him. The scene was normal except for a square area that contained 3 distorted Johnnys with the red helicopter in the background and part of his S.O.S. thinking cloud below... The glitch I sent you earlier today happened again. This time the square "insert" was part of the mermaid dinner scene..

Number One. Today the screen was divided into 2 colors: orange and blue.

No JC — On 9 Oct 1997 Timothy M. Foor reported:
I looked up to see the island completely normal with no Johnny, I thought that it might be the invisible Johnny bug that you have spoke of but there was no activity at all. No sounds of activity either, just no Johnny . . . I am running J.C. on a Windows NT platform. I let it go for about 3 hours with no change what so ever, but the system was not locked because the water graphic (waves on the edge of the island) continued to update. After exiting to the desktop and returning to J.C. everything was normal again. (Johnny was back and fishing).
Anyone else seen this?
Sound problems
You may sometimes get problems with sound. Here are a couple of examples:

Sound only — On 9 Dec 1998 Gary reported:
I've got an NT workstation and a couple of times JC kicked in with audio only. This last time he wouldn't go away after I became active on the computer. As I sit here and type this email I'm still hearing Johnny coming through my speakers.
Anyone else seen this? Or, more importantly, know what causes it? My guess is lack of low-end memory (but that's always my guess!).

Muttering — On 14 Oct 1996 John Bennett reported:
The other day, I had an MS-Word lock-up just as JC was muttering about something. This caused the sound card to go into permanent mutter mode. When I managed to exit into Windows, there was obviously still some legacy of JC trapped in there, because the muttering went on and on. Having left Windows and faced only with the DOS prompt, the muttering continued...
It was only by using Ctrl-Alt-Del that I finally managed to get some silence.
Tough guy, that JC.
